"Where the Monsters Are"

Films: Nightbreed (1990)

Alias: Notably Aaron Boone/Cabal, Peloquin, Kinski, Narcisse, Dirk Lylesburg, Rachel, Babette, Shuna Sassi, Ohnaka, Leroy Gomm, the Berserkers, Baphomet

Type: Mystical

Location: Civilized Area/Underground

Height/Weight: That of average humans.

Affiliation: Neutral, leaning on Good

Summary: They say that when man truly became the dominant species on Earth, it drove off the other creatures for fear of facing competition. But where did all of those weird and wonderful creatures go? The answer may surprise you.

History: Long ago, the "Nightbreed", or simply all the supernatural beings, were banished by mankind into hiding. So most of them settled in Midian, a sprawling underground city overseen by their God, the demon Baphomet. But they are not the true monsters of this story. That dubious honor would go to Dr. Phillip K. Decker, a phony psychologist who is in truth a vicious serial killer bend on destroying both his fellow man and all of Midian.

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: Midian is pretty much destroyed in the ensuing battle between the Nightbreed and Decker's minions, but most of them manage to escape. They will find a new home soon, as their prophecies have foretold...

Powers/Abilities: Various, but most are gifted with immortality.

Weakness: The light and anything conventional.

Scariness Factor: 2.5-A lot of the Nightbreed are rather scary to look at. Some of them even seem to be in a constant state of body horror. But in truth, the Midians are actually quite peaceful in nature, and just want to stay as far from humans as possible. In short, they're a lot like us.

Trivia: -Upon hearing that he was making the monsters look too sympathetic from a guy who was completely missing the point, Clive Barker reportedly created a sizeable dent in the wall privately.

-This film's theatrical ending had the drunken priest madly resurrect Decker, but Barker hated it due to it being a hastily made sequel hook. The actual ending, along with all of the other cut footage, would not see the light of day until 2012.
